Samsung owes Apple more than $1 billion in damages for violating Apple hardware and software patents, a California jury ruled on Friday.

The jury found that Samsung infringed upon Apple patents having to do with physical design and user interfaces, often willfully, and that several of the South Korean company’s products diluted Apple’s trade dress, especially as it related to various iPhone models.

On Friday, a day after announcing it was slashing 10,000 jobs, the Finland-based company was worth about $9.3 billion on the New York Stock Exchange. That’s a mighty fall from the middle of 2000, when Nokia’s market cap neared $269 billion as cell phones first became ubiquitous.

Ouch.

Also, look at the macro-trend. Two companies are trending upwards (Apple, Google). While two are trending downwards (Microsoft, Nokia). Just thinking about the companies the past 10+ years in general terms, this alignment makes perfect sense.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) expressly said that the Christmas Day bomb attempt by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was in retaliation for the Obama cluster-bomb airstrike in Yemen that killed dozens of women and children along with U.S. support for the Yemeni dictator. The Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan was motivated by “the killing of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
